About the presentation
Disability groups estimate that fewer than 10 per cent of publications worldwide are currently accessible to people with print disability. Reading materials must always be developed with equal access in mind so all readers have the chance to engage with the stories and information we create. Editors therefore need to learn how to prepare text and images so that people who read tactually and aurally don’t miss out on information that is conveyed visually.
This presentation aims to provide editors with an understanding of the key issues involved in creating accessible content. It will introduce the diverse ways in which audiences read and the barriers to reading that people experience if their needs are not addressed adequately. It will then discuss best practice in writing and editing, including how to create appropriate image descriptions (alt text).
About the presenter
Julie Ganner AE is a freelance editor and a lecturer in editing for The University of Sydney’s Master of Publishing. She has represented the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) at the Australian Inclusive Publishing Initiative (AIPI), a cross-industry forum on print accessibility, and is former chair of IPEd’s Accessibility Initiative Working Party. Julie is co-author of Books without barriers: A practical guide to inclusive publishing (IPEd and Australian Publishers Association 2023) and Inclusive publishing in Australia: An introductory guide (AIPI 2019). Both guides are available for free download in a choice of formats.
